Clophill Lakes, Bedfordshire

Container Case Study

Lion Containers have created a brand-new visitor centre for Clophill Lakes Nature Reserve. The team worked alongside The Greensand Trust to bring this innovative project to life. Using a bespoke shipping container conversion, the centre offers a sustainable, low-impact solution. It perfectly suits the site’s sensitive conditions while preserving its natural beauty and historic character.

The original plan called for a traditional permanent building. However, due to sensitive ground conditions, conventional construction wasn’t possible. Refusing to let this halt progress, the project architect proposed an alternative: a modular visitor centre constructed from converted shipping containers. Lion Containers was chosen for the project and delivered a flexible, aesthetic, and functional space without disturbing the environment.

Specifications

Lion Containers fabricated four 40ft shipping containers at the factory and joined them on-site to create the finished centre. The team sealed the roof joints on-site to create a watertight installation that offers year-round protection and finished the exterior with wooden cladding, shaping it in a soft, wavy form to reflect the surrounding landscape. This thoughtful touch gives the building a rustic, beautiful finish that blends seamlessly with its environment. It softens the industrial lines of the containers and creates a natural appearance.

During construction, Lion used high-grade spray foam for thermal insulation and sound control. This ensures a comfortable atmosphere for visitors and staff. The layout includes three toilets- male, female, and accessible, each with their own external entrance. Lion installed roller shutters on all external doors and windows to protect the building when not in use. An outdoor sink was also added for visitor convenience.

A dedicated fully equipped office sits within the centre, complete with a staff kitchen and private staff toilet. The experienced conversions team installed all mechanical and electrical services. This included cabling, air conditioning units, plumbing, and data connections to support daily operations.

The visitor cafe area was carefully designed to feel welcoming and connected to nature. It features a mix of booth-style seating, tables and chairs, and nature-themed wallpaper that reflects the scenery outside. This inviting space gives guests a cosy spot to enjoy hot and cold snacks and refreshments while soaking up views of the reserve.
