Container Case Study

A shipping container gym is a practical way to create a dedicated fitness space at home without the time and cost of traditional building work. The right insulation, flooring and electrics can turn a container into a comfortable workout environment.

A homeowner in Aberystwyth wanted a private training space separate from the main house. Converting a container provided a fast and durable solution that could be installed with minimal disruption.

What Was the Client Looking For?

The client wanted a fully equipped shipping container gym, usable all year round. They needed the space insulated, well-lit and large enough to fit all the gym equipment.

They also wanted the interior to feel open and bright, rather than enclosed, which meant incorporating large doors and windows into the design.

Specifications

Lion chose a new 20ft (once-shipped) container as the foundation, designing the layout to maximise usable floor space while still allowing room for doors, mirrors and electrical fittings.

The goal was to create a compact but professional home gym that felt like a professional studio.

Internal Modifications

To make the shipping container gym comfortable in all seasons, Lion fully insulated and lined the interior.

  • Timber stud framework fitted to the walls and roof
  • 50mm insulation installed between studs to retain heat
  • Finished with 9mm MFC lining panels for a clean, durable interior
  • Original marine ply floor upgraded to suit fitness use
  • 10mm rubber gym flooring installed to provide shock absorption
  • Electrical systems installed to support lighting, heating and gym machines
  • Two 5ft anti-corrosive light fittings with switches
  • Two twin 13-amp sockets for equipment and accessories
  • A 2kW wall-mounted convector heater with external isolator and distribution board
  • Three large wall mirrors supplied and installed

A key requirement was to avoid the typical enclosed feel of a container. To achieve this, Lion installed large glazed openings. A glass personnel door and patio doors let natural light into the shipping container gym, making the space feel larger and more welcoming.

Exterior Finish and Delivery

Lion repainted the container in the client’s chosen Anthracite Grey to match the surrounding property. Once complete, Lion delivered the container gym to Aberystwyth and positioned it ready for immediate use. The conversion took just 4 weeks to complete.
