Container Case Study

Lion Containers delivered a specialist shipping container conversion for a professional safety services company. The client needed a purpose-built training facility created from converted shipping containers to safely simulate confined space environments. This facility would be used to train their own staff as well as external companies in safe access, emergency procedures, and operational best practices.

This shipping container conversion project involved converting a 40ft container and a 20ft container into a multi-level training setup. The Lion team designed, fabricated, and installed everything to strict safety specifications.

Specifications

The bottom level featured a shipping container conversion of a 40ft container with full internal modifications. Lion fitted three internal ladders, three roof hatches, and two side hatches into the container. The team added two personnel doors, wooden partitions, a crawl tube, and mid-point ramps for training exercises.

Next, Lion created a second shipping container conversion by stacking a 20ft container on top of one half of the 40ft unit. This upper container included two internal ladders, two external ladders and aluminium checker plate for ladder protection. A custom-built 20ft platform was installed next to the upper container for safe access.

Another identical 20ft platform was added on top of the 20ft container. This platform created a safe, elevated walkway for trainees during working at height simulations. The Lion team designed both platforms to handle heavy weight, unlike standard containers.

To secure these areas, Lion Containers installed open mesh GRP floor panels for anti-slip protection on each platform. Custom staircase, supported by the containers rather than the ground, provided safe access to the platforms. Stairs and handrails were fully galvanised for long-term durability.

The team completed FEA (Finite Element Analysis) calculations for every shipping container conversion structure. These calculations confirmed the strength of ladders, anchor points, and platform load capacities.

Both shipping container conversions and platforms in this project received a two-pack paint finish in RAL 2408005, to match the client’s building for a professional look. Lion added aluminium checker plate where required for added surface protection.

A crane safely positioned all the containers, platforms, and staircases on-site. Weekly client check-ins ensured complete satisfaction throughout this complex shipping container conversion project.

The customer visited several times and praised the consistent quality and smooth project management. This shipping container conversion now serves as a safe, fully customised confined space training facility for multiple companies.

Lion Containers delivered this shipping container conversion on time and to precise client specifications. The final result exceeded expectations in both durability and training functionality.
