Stacked Shipping Containers with Working Decks
We supplied and delivered 20 x 20ft used containers and 14 x 40ft used high cube containers with twistlocks, to a tyre wholesaler, the containers were then double stacked and some of the roofs used as working decks. Lucy explains the job in more depth.
We have worked with this company a number of times before, supplying large quantities of standard containers to various sites. The company are wholesalers of trade tyres and their containers are used for the safe and dry storage of stock. I received a call from one of the site managers, Dan, at their site in Chepstow. Dan needed several more containers for their site expansion. The containers needed to be the same specification as the units already on site, the new containers would be used to extend the current line of 40ft units. We would also be adding 20ft containers to stack on top of the containers with the remaining space on top of the lower units to be used as a working deck. We quoted all containers as standard height wind and watertight ex shipping containers.
Dan and I had several conversations about the units, how we would deliver and the most cost effective way to make this order work. After everything was in place, to get the order moving we decided to do a site visit before the delivery of the containers. For a big delivery like this, it’s usually best to check out where we are sending our hauliers to.
It’s a good job we did the site visit as it turned out the 40ft units on site were high cubes! Normally this wouldn’t cause an issue, but there is a one foot height difference between the units, and once lined up, this would prove difficult when working on top of them. Yes it would be a good leg workout to step up and down the containers however not the most practical way to work! Following this, we changed the order of the 14 x 40ft standard height containers to high cubes. As we hold over £1.5 million pounds worth of stock in our depots across the country, it was relatively easy to change the containers over.
We pulled all 34 containers from our depots in London and Birmingham using a Newport based haulier local to the customer. The hauliers collected the containers over 6 working days and shunted them into their depot. Once all containers were in Newport, the haulier allocated two flat beds to shunt all the units into site over two days where they met the crane to off-load them. Due to the reach required to stack the 20ft containers, our hauliers used a vehicle mounted with an 80 tonne per meter crane – quite a beast!
Once the haulier was finished, the customer was very happy. A little bit of planning goes a long way when it comes to moving big steel boxes around the country!
